Joe Jonas has come a long way since his days as a preteen frontman for a Disney-fied family band. These days, he’s looking a little more Tom Selleck than clean-cut boy bander thanks to a new addition to his face: a thick brown ‘stache.
The 28-year-old, who is currently touring with his rock band, DNCE — where it appears funky hairdos are a prerequisite — debuted his new look on Instagram earlier this month on his birthday; however, the ‘stache made its official red-carpet debut during Sunday evening’s show at The Forum in Los Angeles.
The thick, Magnum P.I.-style stache, a look occasionally referred to as the “pornstache,” is one of the most divisive of all facial hair styles, up there with the goatee and mutton chops. The jury is still out on whether Jonas’ is a hit or a miss.
In 2017, the thick ‘stache, popularized by other manly pop culture icons like Nick Offerman and Alex Trebeck, has been making a comeback, as have ’70s-style shaggy hair and flamboyant suits, like the Saturday Night Fever-esque white blazer and lilac shirt combo that Jonas wore to the VMAs, and many of the colorful looks being worn onstage by Harry Styles.
Jonas’ new look may also have been a nod to his band’s collaboration with king of ’70s rock, Rod Stewart, on the remix of Stewart’s 1978 hit, “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.”
